For many people, their credit report tends to be a very ethereal thing. It seems to come from somewhere “out there”, and is magically created by some unknown group called “them”. In reality your credit report is created by you — although it is created by a very imperfect process.
The celebrated “them”, is actually composed of two separate groups of people, each with their own goals and objectives. Neither of those groups has your best interest at heart. One of these two groups — the money lenders of the world — are of course simple capitalists, whose only interest is in making more money. If they can do that by avoiding lending money to people who won’t pay it back, then their interests are served. If the imperfections in the system cause them to miss a few good people, they won’t lose any sleep over it.
Of course, the second group, is the three established credit reporting agencies:
- TransUnion
- Experian
- Equifax
These three agencies have been around for quite some time and each, over time, has developed a similar but unique method of gathering information from people who lend money and automating the process of organizing the information into a credit report. This group, like the last mentioned, has as its primary goal, making money. Like the other group, they have no particular interest in protecting you or your rights.
The goal of this site is to make you more aware of the practices used by all of these companies. By learning more about how they work you can do more to make them work for you — instead of against you.
